👋 Hi, I'm Federico Pepe, an Ableton Certified Trainer and founder of Frequenze Academy, an online Ableton Certified Training Center. I originally designed this tool to solve a simple problem I had: I wanted to get better at playing Ableton Push in Chromatic Mode.
I strongly believe that Ableton Push and Ableton Move are amazing instruments, not just controllers for Ableton Live. But unlike most traditional instruments, there aren't many resources that clearly explain how to play them. There are some YouTube videos that cover the basics and share a few "quick tips", but coming from a musical background, this wasn't what I was looking for. I needed a way to understand the grid, study it over time, and practice it like I would with any other instrument.
This project started as a web app that I initially built for myself and has been on GitHub for quite some time. I later shared a first draft on Ableton's Discord server, where a few users helped me fix some issues and contributed new ideas.
Then I started learning Max for Live and decided to try porting the web app into a Max for Live device. This has been a long learning journey for me, but I'm very proud of the results I've achieved.
I hope this tool will be helpful for others, especially educators who integrate Ableton Push and Ableton Move into their curriculum. Because of that, I decided to keep the web app freely accessible, with no registration required, and to include a free option to download the Max for Live version. This way, anyone who's curious about Ableton Push or Ableton Move as an instrument can start learning, regardless of their budget.
From a technical perspective, the tool is built using p5.js, webmidi.js, and tonal.js, which handles the automatic chord detection.
